The CWU is campaigning against the
Governments commitment to the Hooper review to part privatise Royal
Mail.
In this Branch Area we have 8 MP's: 7 Conservatives, 1 Liberal
Democrat and 1 Labour MP. All have been sent letters requesting that
they do not support the Governments aim to privatise Royal Mail.
On Tuesday 24 February 2009, the CWU held a national
rally and campaigned in Westminster and then went to Parliament and
lobbied MP's against the Part Privatisation of Royal Mail, which Lord
Peter Mandelson is presenting a bill to Parliament following the
recommendation by Richard Hooper on the Review of Royal Mail.
The Branch attended the rally where there were 31
speakers from the Trade Union Affiliates, a number of Labour MP's and
a speaker from UNI Global Union on behalf of 2 million postal workers
globally. All support the CWU's campaign to say "No to Privatisation"
and echoing our theme of "Keeping the Post Public"
A Commons Early Day Motion (EDM 428) has the support of
141 Labour back Bench MP's and with a few cross party support the
number of MP's that have currently signed the EDM stands at 171, which
is the 5th in the list of rankings and could become the top EDM which
currently is the Gaza Crisis Appeal.
Peter Mandelson's Bill's begins its passage on the 10th
March where it will receive its 2nd Reading. The Campaign continues to
obtain other MP's who have not signed the EDM to sign and the
Government must be defeated in its aim to let a public service go into
private partnership.

THE CAMPAIGN STEPS UP ...
Of course,
your support is vital to the campaign, please help us keep your postal
service in the public domain!
